Comment on One watch for life or a collection to rotate through? by Iskandar Azaman

Love your website.

And i totally agree regarding having a collection to rotate through. I have the exact same problem but had it solved when I bought my Bremont MB2 a few weeks back. When I graduated 5 years ago, I got a Planet Ocean as a present to myself. It was my first fine watch purchase. I've used it everywhere, doing everything and after 5 years it looks beat up with a broken springbar and stuck bezel etc. etc. I love that watch.

When I sent it in for repairs i didn't know it was going to take so long. After weeks not wearing a fine watch and having to make do with a G-Shock for everything, I actually bought the Bremont as an impulse buy whilst waiting to catch a plane at the airport. I immediately took off the G-Shock and put on the Bremont. No offense to Casio (I love G-shocks) but it just doesn't feel so good wearing a rubber watch with a suit testifying in court as an expert witness.

So, I'm not in the single watch category. Next in my sights are either a JLC Master Ultra Thin or a GO Senator Sixties. I really need to get a proper dress watch. Something timeless which i can pass on to my kids.

Interesting to see those lists appear every now and then on major watch sites. I assume it is a basic desire of man to be judged, rated and compared - like it was in school, like your boss does it at work.

I wonder about the intention of theses lists? Will a first time buyer spend 15.000,- on a VC (which is missing from this list) just because it's rated top notch on some website?

Apart from that, ratings reflect the editor's most personal experiences and perceptions. Is it the brand's emotion/dedication, the heritage, the build-quality, the desirabilty?

E.g.: Bulgari has an inhouse movement, innovates with a carbon/gold alloy and you seriousely rate it with Nixon and Skagen?

Sure, there's nothing wrong with showing your personal preferences on your website but breaking down the criteria would give it a bit more sense.

Good to hear that the Kazimon survived such a dramatic fall with flying colors.

Something I noticed in this picture and your review: the tachymeter scale is explicitly marked km/h, which while charmingly metric and perhaps emphatically German, is a bit amateurish. After all, the chronograph tachymeter is just a fixed conversion of elapsed time in seconds per generic unit to units per hour, and does not vary depending on the unit involved. The Speedmaster gets this right, marking its bezel with only "tachymeter", since it is the same scale regardless of if you're measuring miles/hour, kilometers/hour, or even liters per hour (when determining flow).

I am in between a "Grail Seeker" and "The Undeserving." I bought my own Rolex Submariner this year - so a bit of "The Undeserving" there. I have about 15 watches, though only a few more than $1,000. But I continually look for the next unique watch of quality, so bit of the "Grail Seeker."

Perhaps that makes me a an "Undeserving Grailer."

Interesting quote. An IWC Ingenieur Chrono can be had at the same price as a sub, actually less (discounting), and uses a Valjoux 7750. The Sub uses an in-house 3135. That said, I love the IWC Ingenieur Chrono. I find that quote a bit pretentious itself, ironic actually. Omega is still mainly using modified ETA movements and is sold in every mall across America. I am just not getting the comparisons given in that quote. All great brands mentioned in my opinion, but the comparisons seem a bit miss guided.

Your Sub LV is the best with the Maxi-Dial, very nice.

Thanks for the clarification - the news from ETA and Swatch is VERY mixed. I seriously can't get the story straight. The base calibers and perhaps the parts that ETA sells are very important to the watch industry and will make it all that more expensive for them to just buy fully assembled ETA movement and take them apart. ETA movements, case calibers and parts are now more than ever, going to be a pain to get. Thanks for the discussion!
